Stage 2 - from Montecchio to Chiampo
The second stage of the Cammino dei Grandi Santuari Mariani leaves Montecchio Maggiore, the pilgrim crosses the Guà river and ascends towards Arzignano to end his second day of walking in Chiampo, which can be reached via the convenient cycle path. This section of the route presents a fine variety of environments, taking the walker through woods and cultivated countryside. Again, the route is mostly flat, with only one climb of note about 6 km from the start, which takes us to the Castle of Arzignano on a convenient asphalt road. The main attraction is the sanctuary of the Blessed Claudius' Grotto of Lourdes at the ancient parish church of Chiampo, but a place of special cultural interest is also the local museum.
Stage 10 - from Lago Santo to Trodena
Leaving the lake, the tenth stage of the Great Marian Shrines Trail coincides for several kilometres with the Sentiero Italia and the European Path E5, leading to Cauria and then up a demanding climb to the Monte Corno hut (about 1700 m asl. a.s.l.), from where there is an unforgettable panorama of the Lagorai Mountains, the Pala Group, the Val di Fiemme, the Corno Bianco and Corno Nero peaks, Latemar, Catinaccio, Sciliar, the Stubai Alps and the Ötztal Alps. Descending a bit in altitude, the Cammino leads to Trodena, in the Monte Corno Nature Park, the lowest and southernmost protected area in South Tyrol.
Stage 8 - from Pergine to Baselga
The eighth stage of the Way of the Great Marian Sanctuaries takes us on a long and fairly constant climb from Pergine Valsugana to Baselga di Piné. Introduced by the imposing Monumento al Redentore (Redeemer Monument) and the intermediate point of today's stage, is Montagnaga, where the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Piné rises, the main Marian Sanctuary in the diocese of Trento, which for three centuries has been a pilgrimage destination attracting the faithful from the Triveneto and all of northern Italy. Once past it, we cross the beautiful Laghestel Reserve, which since 1971 has been protecting the delicate environment of the ancient, almost completely swamped Laghestel lake. Once we reach the asphalt road, we continue to the end of the ordierna stage on the shores of Lago della Serraia.
09 - Da Baselga di Piné a Lago Santo
After a stop in Baselga di Piné, the ninth stage of the Way of the Great Marian Sanctuaries reaches Lake Serraia and continues along the shores of Lake Piazze before descending towards Segonzano, where it is impossible not to admire the eponymous Earth Pyramids and the castle. The stage ends with a final effort with the steep climb to Lago Santo, situated at an altitude of 1,200 m in the watershed basin created by the erosion of ice into the porphyry.
Stage 7 - from Lavarone to Pergine
Leaving Lake Lavarone, the seventh stage of the Way of the Great Marian Sanctuaries descends towards the Valle di Centa. The itinerary follows the course of the stream that gives it its name to reach Caldonazzo, where the church of San Valentino has been attested since the 12th century. It then ascends through orchards with splendid views of Lake Caldonazzo. The route is dominated by Castel Pergine, one of the most fascinating fortresses in Trentino, and leads us to Pergine Valsugana, where the seventh stage of the route ends. After the first 4 kilometres or so of fairly sharp descent, the route does not present any challenging gradients.
Stage 4 - from Castelvecchio to Schio
The fourth stage of the Route of the Great Marian Sanctuaries starts from Castelvecchio and ends in Schio. Leaving Castelvecchio, the Way descends to cross the Val d'Agno and, after Novale, which we find approximately 10 km from the start, begins to gain altitude again as far as Passo Zovo. Finally, the route descends to close the stage at Schio, known for its rich textile tradition, also of international importance, and characterised by a rich heritage of historic buildings and fine churches. Today the route, which is more undulating than in the first stages, follows paths and dirt roads for the most part, with asphalt sections near the towns and on the flat sections.
Stage 3 - from Chiampo to Castelvecchio
From Chiampo the route begins to gain altitude, ascending to Nogarole Vicentina and entering the Piccole Dolomiti Cimbre, which offer pilgrims breathtaking scenery. After reaching the highest point at approximately 850 metres above sea level at Monte Postale di Castelvecchio, pilgrims can descend slightly in altitude to end their stage in Castelvecchio. Once again, the route leads along little-used asphalt roads and paths through an unforgettable natural landscape. As far as the altitude difference is concerned, after an initial flat section, the route climbs steeply to Nogarole Vicentino and then continues to climb, but more gently, until it reaches 860 m above sea level about 2 km from the end of the stage. The arrival in Castelvecchio is preceded by a short descent.
Stage 1 - from Monte Berico to Montecchio Maggiore
The Way of the Great Marian Sanctuaries begins at the Sanctuary of Monte Berico, located a few minutes from the centre of Vicenza. After enjoying the splendid view of the city from the square in front of the sanctuary, pilgrims can set out, along roads with little traffic and paths, towards Montecchio Maggiore, the first stage point of the Walk. The route is mostly flat and climbs two hills of moderate altitude to Valmarana and a few kilometres before reaching Montecchio.
Stage 6 - from Arsiero to Lavarone
Continuing along the Val d'Astico cycle path, the sixth stage of the Way of the Great Marian Sanctuaries passes the tower of Longobard origin of Pedescala, joining the Apparitions Route. After following the entire Val d'Astico, we reach Lastebasse, whose splendid woods were for centuries the subject of dispute between the Serenissima and the inhabitants of nearby Folgaria. With a steep climb, we then begin to follow the imperial road that once connected it with the Valsugana, reaching Dazio and then continuing to climb, immersed in a magnificent panorama, as far as Lake Lavarone (1079 m a.s.l.) on whose shores this stage ends.
Stage 5 - from Schio to Arsiero
In the fifth stage of the Way of the Great Marian Sanctuaries, leaving Schio, the route reaches the sanctuary of Santorso, of medieval origin and a pilgrimage destination since the eighteenth century because of the relics from the sanctuary of the Madonna del Summano preserved here. Once past it, the route climbs to the Church of the Angel at Belvedere di Camposasso, where an image of the Annunciation has been the destination of a historic pilgrimage on 25 March, the Feast of the Annunciation, since the 17th century. Once down in the Val d'Astico, the route, stopping at Arsiero, takes advantage of the Val d'Astico cycle path, an excellent example of an abandoned railway that has been magnificently restored as a cycle-pedestrian route.
Stage 11 - from Trodena to Pietralba
The eleventh stage of the Way of the Great Marian Sanctuaries starts from Trodena and descends to Redagno, a tiny mountain village where it is possible to visit the geological museum. The route then continues along Trail E5 to reach the geological path of the Bletterbach Gorge, of great natural interest. To walk along it - and to continue the walk - it is necessary to wear a helmet, which will be provided free of charge to those who walk along Path E5. Continuing on towards Pietralba, the views are unforgettable and open up to the characteristic profile of the Sciliar and the peaks on the border between Italy and Austria. This stage and with it the Way ends at the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Pietralba (Wallfahrtskirche Maria Weissenstein), which rises majestically in the Val d'Ega.
